Lone Star, Texas comment and aerial photo

Jim, this photo is from Google and is fairly recent. I was at the site about four months ago, and it has largely been overtaken by vegetation. When you stand at the projection booth, the screen tower is obscured by pine trees. In fact, there are so many pines now that when I was there taking photos, I could not find a perspective where I could get a clean shot of the screen. It is hard to find because of this, as it is difficult to see from the road. It is located about halfway from Daingerfield and Lone Star, TX on US Hwy. 259.

Lone Star, Texas comment

Lone Star Drive-In, Lone Star, TX
comments: My father built the Lone Star with a partner in 1953 and operated it until 1959 when I was nine years old.

Your location for the Lone Star is a little off, as it was not right in the town. It was between Lone Star and Daingerfield, TX. I have a satellite photo of the theater location that is fairly recent.

New Jersey drive-ins comment

Just to let you know there was a drive in located ajancent to the Willowbrook Mall just west of RT 23 {South Of Rt 46} on Willowbrook Blvd, called the Anthony Wayne Drive In. I was there in 1969 to see a James Bond movie....Diamonds Are Forever and it was paired with A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum.....after it has been 40 years so the movie titles might be wrong, but I could show you the place where it was.

San Antonio, Texas comment

Mission Drive In, San Antonio tx

Sadly, the Mission Drive-In here in San Antonio is no longer. Santikos Theaters, who owned the drive-in, sold the land to the city of San Antonio, who are turning the space into a much needed library for the south side. they will save part of the existing structure since it is part of the history of the city and it is in a historic district (just blocks away from Mission San Jose).
