Message: I noticed that you could not find the Mt. View Drive-In on your map of Mount Shasta. The theatre was located near the intersection of Hwy. 89 and I-5 about 2 miles south of the city center. If you look at a satellite map, the Azalea Road freeway overpass points directly at the old screen location east of I-5. The theatre was closed in the mid-80's after the screen blew down in a storm. Everything has been removed from the site, but the terraced parking areas are still there. A new housing development is encroaching on the site, but the original access road is still usable. See my photos at http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/catmtvd.

Santa Clara and San Jose, California comment

Message: Hi Jim,
I recently stumbled across your site and have spent so much time browsing! I live on the site of the former Moonlite Drive-In, and while I love my home, I'd almost rather it was still used as a drive-in!

Just thought I'd drop you a note to offer a correction -- the topo map and perhaps accompanying photo are actually of the San Jose Auto Movie, the first drive-in in San Jose. The Santa Clara theater would have El Camino Real on its east side, not Gish Road. I've found this page that offers more info on the San Jose Auto Movie.

Thanks, and I look forward to reading more updates!

California comment

comments = Dear Jim,
I live in Oakley, CA, which is not far from Antioch, CA. Antioch is the home of a former Drive-In, which you do not have listed on your page. The Drive-In, which was known as the Bridgehead Drive-In, continued to show movies until it closed in 1993. The location of this Drive-In is now occupied by a K Mart Store at 3625 East 18th Street, near the HWY 160/HWY 4 Junction.

I fondly remember seeing many poplular movies there, such as Star Wars, E.T., and one of the last ones I saw there, Batman. The Drive-In was owned by the Stamm family, which owned several theaters in the Antioch area (all of which have now closed). I believe the Drive-In opened in the early 1950's with only one screen. It was later expanded to two screens and stayed that way until the late 1980's, when it was expanded to three screens. It had three screens when it closed in 1993.

For those of us who can remember this important landmark in our area, I feel it would be appropriate to add this Drive-In to your page. Incidentally, the street that runs next to the new K Mart is named Drive-In Way, after the former Bridgehead Drive-In.

There are 2 Northern California CLOSED DI's that you don't have listed. One was the Pleasant Hill Motor Movies, located at 2040 Contra Costa Blvd in Pleasnt Hill CA. The second is the Island Auto Movies in Alameda CA (was across the street from the Alameda Auto Movies DI).

Your site is great!!! Please keep up the good work!
